Pornography and Alienation

Description

Okay … this wallpaper is the first in a series on the topic of Christian Erotica and Christian Porn. If you’re interested in more details on this series, or what exactly I mean by Christian Erotica and Christian Porn, then please look in my journal!

I’m beginning this series by trying to explore, and possibly critique, the role that erotica and porn currently play in our society, for better and for worse. This wallpaper deals with one of the most salient negative effects of porn, which is its tendency to lead its viewers down the initially seductive but ultimately bleak and lonely path of alienation.

What do I mean by this? Let me share with you two quotes. The first has a slightly intellectual bent to it:

What pornographic literature does is precisely to drive a wedge between one's existence as a full human being and one's existence as a sexual being -- while in ordinary life a healthy person is one who prevents such a gap from opening up. Normally we don't experience, at least don't want to experience, our sexual fulfillment as distinct from or opposed to our personal fulfillment. But perhaps in part they are distinct, whether we like it or not. ~ Susan Sontag

The second quote is perhaps a bit less brainiac, but just as germane:

Masturbation is like procrastination, it's all good and fun until you realize you are only fucking yourself.

This wallpaper is a photo-manipulation, using the stock photos from the following stock image sources:

A (Sadly) Necessary Artistic Note:

~DelayedRealityStock has shared some excellent stock photos that are very expressive artistic nudes. They are most certainly not pornographic in any way. I used one of these excellent photos precisely for the reason to show that the wedge of pornography has a dual facet. On the one hand, as we all may surmise, it affects both its viewers, and those involved in its production. On the other hand, it is a sad fact that the true definition of pornography lies in the soul of the viewer as much as in the intent of the producer … thus even fine art nudes can become pornographic in the mind of an unbalanced viewer … and the wedge drives deeper home. I have seen too many good and sensitive artists, who just happen to photograph or paint artistic nudes, smeared with the tar and feathers of the pornographer by moral crusaders and prudes, who are no doubt rather unbalanced in their souls, here on DeviantArt. We must all grow up and stop leveling such wild accusations at our fellow artists!

Disclaimer:

This is a political wallpaper; I use it to make a personal commentary on one aspect of the impact of pornography in our society. If you happen to disagree with me … then make your own wallpaper and set the record straight.

Attention Wallpaper Lovers:

Wallpapers get a lot of downloads, but they seldom get very many comments. If you like a wallpaper (by me or anyone else), please please please give it a fave, and leave a comment saying why you like it! And if you don't like it, tell us why! This is very important to those of us who make the wallpapers you download, and not just for reasons of ego-gratification. Some people think of wallpapers as so-much eye-candy ... but they are so much more also. Since you download it onto your desktop, a wallpaper can be a very personal choice, as it is something that stares back at you from your monitor everytime you start your computer. The production of decent wallpapers, like any other kind of art, requires feedback, comments and criticism! So much for my rant ... enjoy the wallpapers, and say something, damnit!!!

Attention Digital Artists:

Have you thought about posting some of your work as wallpapers? The DA community is very much about exploring avenues for creating digital art that is more than "just" eye-candy. But, sometimes, it's fun to remember that art can be as much about function as form, and one of the most traditional ~practical~ uses of digital art is as wallpapers. You might enjoy making and sharing wallpapers that, hopefully, look good and yet make the viewer stop and think for a second, or at the very least do a double-take. You might appreciate the challenge of creating a personal system of syntagmatics that successfully presents complex issues in a "pop-art" medium that tends to be highly iconic in nature. Finally, you might feel a sense of mission in working in a DA genre that really hasn't fully evolved beyond the representation of eye-candy as art. Anyways, think about it ...

I'm not a fan of pornography, but the title you gave this piece and the imagery really creates a powerful dramatic image.
